FABRICATE
From Production to Expression
A workshop on digital design methods & production technique by using Rhinoceros
13-29 October 2008
Instructors:
Ting-Ting Zhang & William Tan
1) To introduce digital generative design and production methodology to its participants.
2) To exploring the possibilities and capacity of generative design, CNC fabrication and the coupling of these two technologies.
3) Students will be ‘designing through making’ – a methodology that focuses on the expression of form, its function and its structural composition all at once.

Introduction
From the inspiration of BeiJing Olympic Stadium, the bird nest. We decide to take up the challenge of constructing such complex structure through Rhinoceros 4.0. Through this project, we are not only testing the limits but also the new abilities of Rhinoceros.
The works are divided into 3 groups : Construction drawing, modeling and visualization.
We model the structure through Rhinoceros and finalize the design. Then from there, we start producing the scale model and construction drawings. During the construction of the scale model, we learn how to make 2D drawings from Rhinoceros and the importance of managing the annotations of the laser cutting templates. Besides, we learn about teamwork, co-ordination of time management and problem solving.
